This program focuses on supporting physicians and their staff to lead the way as health role models for the community. The Red Deer Primary Care Network doctors started with Health Basics in their Workplace. They and their staff are healthy role models. As Mahatma Gandhi said "You must be the change you wish to see in the world."
Health Basics supports employee health in doctors' offices through programs like the '2009 Trek around the Island Challenge'. In this virtual walk around Vancouver Island, clinics and PCN staff really 'walked the talk' as they competed against each other to finish the course. Each participant wore a pedometer and aimed to log a minimum of 11,000 steps per day.
The PCN has three virtual treks a year. A map of each group's Trek progress is hung in each clinic where patients can monitor the progress while they wait for their appointments. Besides getting everyone moving, the Treks create a friendly competition among Red Deer clinics and individual clinic staff. They also develop healthy living champions in each clinic and provide a fun aspect to fitness activities. Patients can see their doctors walk the talk.
